50% - estimated number of South African sex workers with HIV

An estimated 5.2 million people were living with HIV and AIDS in South Africa in 2008, more than in any other country.

It is believed that in 2008, over 250,000 South Africans died of AIDS.

National prevalence is around 11%, with some age groups being particularly affected. Almost one-in-three women aged 25-29, and over a quarter of men aged 30-34, are living with HIV.

50% = estimated number of South African sex workers with HIV.

HIV in South Africa is transmitted predominantly heterosexually between couples, with mother-to-child transmission being the other main infection route.

Is that true?

50% - now that is russian roulette!

2010 World Cup

I don't like to stereotype but history tends to repeat itself. During previous world cups football fans (particualrly of the British variety) have given themselves a name for binge drinking and violence. Whilst intoxicated and pumped full of testosterone how many fans will remember this vital statistic about South African sex workers. Are we about to see an increase in the number of people in Europe with HIV following this? Am I the only one who thinks hosting a World cup in South Africa is a ridiculously stupid idea?

Where did you get that nice

hmmm, kofisam i think you've

hmmm, kofisam i think you've kind of missed the point here. are you an england football fan? if not i dont think you are in a position to say that all fans are 'intoxicated and pumped full of testosterone'and if you are then you sound like you have had a bad experience with some football fans calling you nasty names and you've never quite got over it. you're generalising in other words. granted british fans have a tendancy to drink and be a bit lairy, but that was predominately in the past. hooliganism was rife in the uk in the 80's and 90's, so therefore are you saying it was a bad idea that england hosted euro 96? the last time england fans were in trouble with the police in a big way was the isolated incident at france 98, nearly 12 years ago. since then england fans have been comemorated for their good behaviour and the FA has come under much praise for their efforts to combat hooliganism and in terms of whether or not it is a stupid idea to host the world cup in africa. you might not be alone in this, but you are in the minority. i recently visited africa and had the chance to play football with some kids in kenya. they are so excited about the 2010 world cup, as is the rest of africa. they speak about it with such admiration and passion and i know that they are going to do a great job hosting the most prestigeous event in the world and it will be full of colour and flare. this is the first time footballs greatest prize will come to africa, and iv got a feeling it could be the greatest of them all.
