Millions of people all over the world are downtrodden, victimised and taken advantage of, we all know that. But which group of people do you reckon are the most discriminated
against? Is it people with the wrong colour skin? Or people born in the wrong class? Actually, its people who are the wrong sex.
Women are the worlds poorest, most marginalised and discriminated against people on the planet. Of the 1.3 billion people living in poverty around the world, 70% are women. Women do 66% of the worlds work and get paid less than 5% of its income.
Worldwide trends in rape, mental and physical abuse, trafficking and infanticide are on the up. Women are routinely excluded from decision-making within the family, the community and the political process. And, for the most part, the people in power usually men are standing by and allowing it to carry on.
We are the generation that can end poverty around the world. But we have to get our priorities right. We wont achieve anything while half the human race is discriminated against.
The first step forward is to educate ourselves to understand the laws and traditions designed to keep women down. Then we need to start shouting at the people who uphold the status quo. This issue of Ctrl.Alt.Shift is dedicated to doing just that.
