Event Preview: The Age Of Stupid + Climate Change Expert Panel @ The Ritzy, Brixton
Are you interested in Climate Change? Want to come to a FREE film at The Ritzy in Brixton? Eager to ask questions to some climate change experts?
The lovely people at Platform2 have rented out The Ritzy for an exclusive screening of the hit film ‘Age of Stupid.’ The film is an innovative cinematic experiment, which features Pete Postlethwaite living in the year 2055, after the planet has been destroyed by climate change. He questions why the generations before him (that’s us, by the way...) allowed this to happen.
After watching this moving and thought provoking film, we’ll put some climate change experts on the spot to find out their views on what we should be doing to prevent this supposedly inevitable outcome.
We will show that we can make a difference.
These experts on the panel are people who’ve got a real passion and experience in their field…they are the people who have the potential to help us to stop global warming.
Duncan Law is the coordinator of Transition Town Brixton which is a local community group that works on sustainable living. These eco-warriors run handy sessions on things like green gardening, draught busting and repairing your bikes. He’ll be able to tell us how our own actions at home can combat climate change.
Dr Nafeez Mosaddeq Ahmed is a political economist and director of IPRD (Institute for Policy Research and Development) … don’t switch off … he’s written an amazing book called ‘A user’s guide to the crisis of civilisation and how to save it’ which argues that the current global crises such as climate change, terrorism, and the financial meltdown are part of the same ailing system. He says all these elements are a symptom of a major civilisational transition, the outcome of which is our own choice.
And we’ve got Sol Oyuela, the senior climate change policy advisor at Christian Aid, who can tell us what governments could be doing to combat global warming. She will make it clear that ultimately climate change is an issue of social justice, and that the poorest in this world deserve a better future than the one we’re currently forcing them into.
Finally, Amy Mount from UK Youth Climate Coalition is joining us. UKYCC is an organisation run entirely by young volunteers that aims to inspire and empower young people to work towards a greener future. She’ll be able to tell us what young people are currently doing to combat climate change and how we can all get involved.
So - a free, eye-opening and innovative film, followed by an impassioned debate: a combination that may just inspire you to really try and make a difference to the future of the planet...
... Which isn't bad for a school night.
Come along to show that you can and do want to be part of the change.
