Aim: Market climate change to 16 - 25 year olds online in an innovative way
Climate Urgency
We’ve all heard about climate change. People have been talking about it for as long as we can remember, and maybe it’s easy for us in the UK to forget what it means.
But for people in developing countries it’s more real than ever.
Rich countries have pumped carbon into the atmosphere for decades and now it’s the poorest nations that are paying the price. People are going hungry in northern Kenya because drought there has increased fourfold in he past 25 years. The floods in Bangladesh have wiped away entire villages. These devastating events will become more frequent and intense because of a changing climate - a problem that people in poor countries did little to create.
The UK is responsible for 2% of global carbon emissions but, if you take into account the carbon generated by companies registered on the UK stock exchange, that rises to 15%. And it’s not just about turning off a standby switch here, a light there. We need big cuts in carbon emissions across the board, led and enforced by our government. Individual action is positive, but this alone is not going to prevent further global warming and its enormous impact on people all over the world.
We need the world’s governments to come together and commit to delivering a deal that works for the world’s poor. We need the European Union to cut its emissions by 40% by 2020.
It’s urgent. It’s time for climate justice.
The Competition
Create a topline message that your entry will communicate to get people realising how important the issue of climate change is and that they need to act to get the UK to reduce emissions.
Use whatever online tool you want to get your message out. (Facebook app, iPhone app, online game, short film, animation)
A panel of judges will shortlist the entries down to 15 - 20 who will be invited to come to Ctrl.Alt.Shift HQ and pitch their idea, Dragon’s Den style. The pitches will be filmed and put online for the community to vote on their top 3 ideas. You’ll have around 3 weeks to get as many votes as possible!
What you could win
If you win, your entry will get made - from iPhone app to short film, we’ll work with you to create a finished product which we’ll then send out to get your message about climate change to thousands of people. This will offer you a week’s work experience in the Ctrl.Alt.Shift Team. You’ll also win computer software related to your entry - from Final Cut Express to Dreamweaver.
