Days after a devastating earthquake and consequent eruption, Mount Merapi has erupted again in Indonesia. The first occurred just after the earthquake. Over 30 people were killed within the original Mount Merapi eruption. The area is devastated. The Indonesia earthquake occurred underwater, but the effects have battered the region. Nearly a thousand people are dead or missing as a result of the quake and ensuing tsunami. The hardest hit areas could be difficult to reach, and aid organizations are having a tough time of it. Second Mount Merapi eruption

The volcano on Java island erupted a second time. This had been Mount Merapi. The BBC Reports that just two days before had been the first erruption. The first eruption killed a total of 32 people. These people were either suffocated from gases or died from burns. At least 20 of those people were buried in a communal grave outside of Sidorejo, which is south of the volcano. Among the deceased had been Maridjan, a local elder who was considered the spiritual guardian of the volcano. There are still aid workers trying to find victims of the first blast when numerous victims are starting to show respiratory issues because of the exposure.

Aid slowly coming in

Aid and relief efforts have been slow going. Because of the flooding and also the terrible terrain, victims of the Indonesia earthquake haven’t been getting much aid. At least a day is required to get to the Pagai Islands, reports CNN. Places like that were hit the hardest. The hardest hit islands by the Indonesian tsunami were surrounding islands of Sumatra and Java. As a result of the earthquake and tsunami, 300 are missing when 400 were killed. There are thousands that no longer have a home.

Nonprofits and UN both send aid

The United Nations has sent in relief workers and aid. Nonprofits such as SurfAid has sent in some too. More than anything else, time is needed. This is the only way the volcanic eruptions, earthquake and tsunami damage could be fixed.
