The Marine Corps birthday, or anniversary of its founding, is celebrated by the U.S. Marines on November 10. In Philadelphia on Nov. 10th, 1775, the Continental Congress met to plan the creation of the Marine Corps.  Beginning in 1775 is "Semper Fidelis"


The Continental Marines, which had been a force that would fight the British, had been formed on Nov 10 in a tavern in Philadelphia in 1775 during the American revolution which is why the Marine Corps “birthday” is celebrated that day. The Continental Marines was disbanded in 1783 after the freedom was won by the United States of America. In 1798, to get ready for a confrontation with France, Congress passed a resolution creating the United States Marine Corps. The Marines got a motto in 1883 which was “Semper Fidelis.” “Always faithful” is what this Latin phrase means. ”Semper Fi” is what most individuals know the shortened Marine Corps motto as.



The "Devil Dogs"


The U.S. won the War of 1812. This had been due to the Marine Corps. The civil war didn’t have much of a marines involvement. The north and south divided the ranks. The Marine Corps has a phrase that goes “from the halls of Montezuma.” This phrase started in 1848 throughout the Mexican-American war when the Marine Corps assaulted Mexico City. The Marines acquired their fearsome modern reputation during the battle of Belleau Wood in France during World War I. The Germans nicknamed the Marines “Teufel Hunden” or “Devil Dogs” at Belleau Wood



Dirty jobs are their specialty



The Marines emerged victorious from the fiercest fighting in World War II against the Japanese within the Pacific. Since then, United States of America Presidents have relied on the Marine Corps to undertake the most difficult assignments in conflicts ranging from the Korean war to Vietnam, two Iraq wars and Afghanistan today. The official observation of the Marine Corps birthday started in 1921 by the order of legendary Marine Corps commandant Gen. John A. Lejeune.
