Talking Point - STIs in under 5s
A study in Zaria, Nigeria found that 16 percent of hospital patients treated for sexually transmitted infections were younger than 5.

"We the Peoples of the United Nations, determined to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small..." United Nations Charter
61 years of universal human rights and we're nowhere near achieving it.
This statistic shocks me everyday
Although no justification at all, I did some research as to why this is happening in Zambia. I found that a myth is what's fueling this barbaric crime across southern Africa, men are told that if you want to succeed at work or cure yourself of AIDS, you need to have sex with a minor, virgin, or one of your own children.
Some 20% of Zambians are HIV positive. The incidence of child rape is one factor behind the high number of young girls who are HIV positive. The laws are clearly too weak, I read of cases where men are merely given fines or 2-3 month sentences.
I can't help but think education has a huge part to play, in a country where anti-viral drugs are too expensive or not available, most people are forced to turn to alternative therapies/traditional healers for medical advice, not least because so few can afford a doctor. This is where these old myths are perpetuated. I fully realise this is no excuse for such a sickening act..what can we do to put a stop to it?
