Blog: Life On Wheels - Week 49

Earlier this week, me and Evie (a Norwegian girl who was staying in Bil'in, the Palestinian village where I live) took a trip to Ramallah, the main city in the occupied West Bank. We had heard there would be a protest in the centre of town - not against the Israeli occupation which oppresses Palestinians every day, but against Mahmoud Abbas' illegitimate and unelected Palestinian Authority.

As our servise (a bit like a minibus) pulled into Ramallah, we saw demonstrators marching down the road, so got on our way as quickly as possible to join them. Looking around, we quickly realised that we were the only foreigners there. Saying that, I'm pretty sure that my blood flows in the colours of the Palestinian flag after three months of living the struggle in Bil'in.

"Are you Mubadara?" two Palestinian men walking next to us eagerly asked, handing me an orange scarf and Evie a slogan-emblazoned hat. It soon became apparent that we had joined a political party-specific section of the demonstration. Apparently they support capitalism, which I wasn't too happy about, but never mind, the sun was shining.

After my weekly adventures at the demonstrations in Bil'in, getting tear-gassed the shit out of by the Israeli Occupation Forces whilst protesting against the illegal Apartheid Wall, Ramallah was a very different experience. In this city, unlike any other in the West Bank, you are relatively shielded from the Israeli Occupation which devastates the life of every Palestinian here. There are no checkpoints, no Wall, no physical symbols to protest against...

However, we were marching for a reason. A few days before, Abbas and the Palestinian Authority, under heavy pressure from Israel and the United States, had refused to endorse Richard Goldstone's UN Report into the recent Israeli assault on Gaza.

If you cast your mind back to 'Cast Lead' in January of this year, Israel launched a murderous invasion into the besieged Gaza Strip, killing over 1500 Palestinians in the process, the large majority of them civilians. Protests raged across the world, with hundreds of thousands of angered demonstrators taking to the streets from London to Cairo, for the duration of the 22-day bloodbath.

In response, the United Nations appointed Judge Richard Goldstone to conduct an investigation into the operation.  Despite being a self-professed Zionist, Goldstone had no choice but to admit that there was the possibility that Israel had committed war crimes. It's a bit like saying there is the "possibility" that Stalin might have killed people. Israel, predictably, denounced the findings as "flawed" and "biased", despite the fact that Hamas had also been subject to criticism. It seems that anything that doesn't describe Israel as the number one tourist destination is "biased".

The report also urged the UN Security Council to refer allegations to the International Criminal Court (ICC) if either side failed to investigate and prosecute suspects. Initially, the PA urged UN human rights council members to refer the issue to the Security Council so that this could happen, but when the day of the vote came, they refused to bite the bullet. As the news spread, spontaneous demonstrations spread across Palestine; from Gaza to Ramallah.

The message of our chanting couldn't have been clearer:

"Abbas has got to go!"

After a few rounds of the main square, me and Evie went to a nearby Lebanese restaurant for a bite to eat. On the surface, life goes on as normal in Ramallah, but not far under the surface, a storm is waiting to erupt.

Hey jods, chamblee is clearly

Hey jods, chamblee is clearly a plonker!!!! you rock...keep going squire.Stay safe.

Dear Chamblee your comments

Dear Chamblee your comments encapsulate the nature of this conflict.I do not hear a desire for peace in your words.your heart is closed to the very real struggle of ordinary families trying to live in peace. jodys desire to draw our attention to their plight has unleashed a vitriolic response in you.He comes in peace.your focus on the wheelchair reveals prejudice.

I agree with the posters here

I agree with the posters here who think that the fact that your blogs are attracting negative responses is actually a sign that the message you are spreading is getting under people's skin.

Jody, I'm actually pleased to

Jody, I'm actually pleased to read chamblee's comments as it shows how badly the pro zionist racist and many like him are soiling their pants when they read your blog. All I wanna say is keep up the good work and take care of yourself.

Jody, all this person has

Jody, all this person has done is shown themselves up. How "chamblee" can't show respect for what you are doing there amazes and disgusts me. Reading over all the comments in response shows just how much support youve got, so keep on with what you're doing and, as I'm sure you already have, rise above this wasteman. Lots of love and miss you a lot Fi x

Jody, we need more

Jody, we need more stortytellers like you that highlight the experiences of the individual. The reason you have the utmost respect from myself and so many that others that follow your work is because you give us stories that the mainstream media miss out, stories that fall through the net of so called established news organisations like the BBC.Your stories make me proud to be a part of Crl.Alt.sHIFT There will always be debate and petty comments from those in opposition, but at the end of the day you are part of a movement that seeks to break down the subjugation against an entire people, and those are the stories that people will continue to listen to. (Including me)WIN.

hmmm... this seems to have

hmmm... this seems to have provoked an interesting debate. Of course I agree with freedom of speech, but this is not to be confused with inciting hatred. In the same way that I don't think someone should be around to walk around London saying "kill all blacks" or "kill all muslims" without being directly confronted. In fact, this would be deemed as breaking the law in the UK, whereas supporting Zionism, another racist ideology, is actively encouraged by our government. As for this "chamblee" fella, he has, as far as I can see, no point to make. He's just left a hateful comment for no reason. Personally, I don't think it's any more offensive to say "f*** off" than to say "while your Arab buddies are rioting over some imaginary slight[sic]." The latter might be a bit offensive to, oh I don't know, the entire Palestinian population? He's also accusing me of "demonizing Jews" - not only is this quite an outrageous and defamatory statement to make, but also I think my Jewish friends and my Israeli friends would be quite offended to be associated with the racist policies of the state of Israel. On a final note, how amazing is Ctrl.Alt.Shift?! God knows what's gonna happen when week 50 goes up...

Chamblee, I think it would be

Chamblee, I think it would be best to intelligently debating the merits/flaws/arguments that surround the conflict in the Middle East, rather than attacking Jody's judgement of character or his intentions. Please respect that we want to hear your genuine, legitimate reasons to argue against Jody, not your generalisations about slights suffered by Jody's friends. "I continue to be amazed at the stupidity of injecting yourself between two sides in conflict and then crying crocodile tears when you are tear-gassed." - this is a website dedicated to enacting change through direction action and protesting - ie injecting yourself between two sides in a conflict, or directly confronting what you percieve to be a problem in society. I'm sure George Orwell saw nothing stupid about fighting in the Spanish Civil War; I doubt many supporters of black civil rights in the 1960s saw anything stupid about being jet blasted by water during protests; I doubt Gandhi thought it was stupid to be imprisoned by British authorities during his struggle for Indian home rule. If you believe there is something stupid about this, please elaborate, rather than assuming most users on this site will understand your perspective - I'm sure most people are willing to debate with you, but it is difficult to argue with generalisations that arn't argued out. Jody - don't take this stuff to heart. As long as your not hurting anyone, carry on doing what you believe in and everyone will support you 100% of the way.

On the point of discussion,

On the point of discussion, where's the limit for freedom of speech...? ALL thoughts are very welcome: https://ctrlaltshift.co.uk/forum-freedom-of-speech

Yo Jody, any publicity is

Yo Jody, any publicity is good publicity eh? Don't sweat about the critics - freedom of speech is defo a precious thing. Let the antagonists roll, such comments are transparent, your fans (including myself) with continue to be inspired. So keep making movements star

Chamblee - that was

Chamblee - that was completely unnecessary. Jody your journey and what you're trying to achieve is amazing. Keep up the good work. xxx

At the end of the day we have

At the end of the day we have to respect freedom of speech and we're lucky to live in a society where this applies. Of course today is also the day the BNP are been given a platform on the BBC. While it leaves most of us seething, again, we should still be grateful we have room to debate these important issues. At CAS we don't stand for racism, we stand for this freedom of speech and opportunity to air your experiences and views on global issue. The situation in Palestine has long provoked passionate responses so while it's all good to sit here and debate Jody's antics and whether putting himself in the firing line is admirable or plain stupid, let's keep it clean, constructive and intelligent. Simply telling people to fuck off does little for your arguement. Me personally, I've learnt alot from Jody's reports. Of course, I totally appreciate it's his experience and there's always two sides to every story, but someone has to tell it.

Chantelle- I admire your

Chantelle- I admire your attempt to intervene here but if CAS didnt exist we would make a platform somewhere else. We are all grateful for this lovely website (do you work on it? Unclear.) we do not need to feel 'lucky'. The government which gives us this 'freedom' also takes away freedom from Palestinians every day, when it refuses to speak out against Israel. Although I don't think swearing is going to make it better, you have to understand the politics at hand here. Zionists and apologists of the Israeli state ARE racists. It is our job to confront them as a priority much more than it is to complain about a stupid racist party like the BNP having a little chat with another racist, Jack Straw, on the BBC (another institution which has also failed to speak out against Israel's recent attack on Gaza and greatly failed in its general coverage of Palestine) You are trying to take a neutral stance in this and although again its admirable, its not the right thing to do, not by my standards or the Palestinians who need all the publicity they can get to end this apartheid and genocide. You wouldn't have taken the 'there are two sides to every story' approach to South African apartheid, so you shouldn't to the situation in Palestine today.

My point about being grateful

My point about being grateful is that so many of the journalists that write for CAS do so because they are not given the platform to do so on more established news channels. I've been shocked at some of the excuses I've heard for stories not running elsewhere. As for me, I edit this here website and the magazine. You may think the BNP are a stupid racist party but why should we care less about their growth and future action? It's not just a 'little chat', it's much bigger than that. I have the upmost respect for Jody and the earlier comments riled me like the next (wo)man but the answer for me isn't to go and say 'fuck yourself'. It makes you as lame as the person making the earlier comments. As for being neutral, I wouldn't say that either. I'm just trying to encourage discussion - that person (forgotten the name sorry) has already made themselves look idiotic, racist and ridiculous. We don't need to be doing the same.

The Labour party is also a

The Labour party is also a racist party and it causes much more damage around the world than the BNP has ever and could ever dream of doing. In the last 4 years £82 million was spent deporting people, let alone their attitude to Israel's actions. I am against the BNP and will always oppose them, no doubt, but right now they are not the main target. However, they are still a target. Well done for the work on this site. I mean it, I think its a great platform. My comment was not meant to be a dig at that at all. And I agree- I don't think swearing is the answer, I said that, but I'm not going to try and silence or stop anyone attacking any Zionist or apologist of the Israeli state. Its easy to see why they are angry! I think anyone with a bit of sense can see they are angry and just ignore them till they calm down. Safe a

we'll agree to agree then

we'll agree to agree then haha

chamblee, Jody is one million

chamblee, Jody is one million times the human being you will ever be. In any fight, I think it's always important to consider the strength of the opposition. In our fight for BDS and for ultimately a Free Palestine, the opposition isn't really up to much is it? In all my time campaigning, I've heard one, many two, decent articulated arguements for Zionism. The rest of the opposition is lacking bigtime and old chamblee here is testament to that. Jody, brother, miss you a lot, stay safe, and see you soon inshallah.

Chamblee; I'm pretty sure

Chamblee; I'm pretty sure nobody "stooped" to putting Jodie in harm's way, he went to Palestine out of his own free will. The irony of your comment is hilarious: "move himself and his wheelchair to another location". As angry as the ENTIRE world is at the way the Israeli government behaves, we do still understand that Israel contains very many normal people who don't wish death and eviction on non-Jews in Palestine. Do yourself and your nation a favour, go and meet Jodie and speak to him. Thats a teenager who's traveled halfway round the world for no personal gain other than the peace of mind in knowing he's done what he can to end the violent oppression of an innocent people.

VICTORY TO THE INTIFADA !

VICTORY TO THE INTIFADA !

Chamblee you are just an

Chamblee you are just an apologist for apartheid. Not only those who followed orders in Nazi germany were guilty but so were those who stood by and did nothing. Or in your case pontificated about those who act. Have you ever been in a house that was forcibly evicted by the police for settlers to move in or stayed in a village under constant raids due to their non violent resistance.... or did you just sit in your computer chair and type awfully angrily at those who try to make a positive difference in the world. There is a word for people like you: complicit

The venom from the rabid

The venom from the rabid anti-Israeli, knee-jerk left wing is always a pleasure to read. Using buzzwords and slogans, always slanted prose, you only seek to demonize Israel and Jews. If you really cared about "the anger and resentment" that I evoke "in Jody's friends and loved ones" you would better suggest that he move himself and his wheelchair to another location. To move his chair to be sure that he will be filmed choking on the teargas is pathetic in the extreme. I help teach the blind to be self-sufficient in the sighted world but would never stoop to putting them in harm's way to make someone else's misguided, one sided political point.

I love how easily the racist

I love how easily the racist morons of pro-Israel lunatic fringe are able to dismiss criticism of Israel and somehow still take the moral highground of neutrality. He slams "buzzwords and slogans" while conflating Israel with Jews. Yeah, if Jody hates that an ethnocratic, expansionist terror state is killing a bunch of civilians (including a bunch of his friends) it must mean he hates people who live in said state (or have a religion matching its flags). I also love how instead of holding the military accountable for teargassing non-violent resistance (not to mention legitimate armed resistance to an invading military) you'd rather blame the kid in the wheelchair for and tell him to move. How the hell does a blind man teach the blind to be self-sufficient? Jody can trek through warzones on a fucking wheelchair he can teach anyone to be more self-sufficient than a racist pro-Israel prick like "chamblee". I also love the whole "one-sided" argument. If Jody is one-sided at least he's leaning towards the right one. Idiot. It's like 10 years ago they'd say "blarggghhh terrorist terrorist anti-Semite glahhh" and now instead they pride themselves on being the "neutral" pro-Israel nuts that are just here to correct our "one-sidedness" while dismissing blogging critical of Israel as "venom". Go fuck yourself sham blee.

Not only is this comment by

Not only is this comment by "chamblee" stupid but it is wrong. Jodie had nothing against Jewish people. He has a problem with Zionists and those who protect the fascist state of Israel. Your comment exposes your own misunderstanding of the struggle from side of the Palestinian and the oppressed. Also your tone and comment surrounding his use of a wheelchair is unnecessary and exposes your level- you are weak and you look for weak excuses to try to stop progressives in this world challenge racism and oppression. Shame on you.

Keep up the good work Jody;

Keep up the good work Jody; it is vital in order to help the international community understand the truth behind the headlines and political posturing. I'm sure your Palestinian comrades respect you more than some of their own politicians! At least the PA reversed its decision and the Goldstone report has now been endorsed by the UN Human Rights Council.

Hey jods, its been ages since

Hey jods, its been ages since i wrote something(no excuse),but i do read all ur posts.....keep up ur work and passion, u r truly an inspiration to all....keep safe homy.

I continue to be amazed at

I continue to be amazed at the stupidity of injecting yourself between two sides in conflict and then crying crocodile tears when you are tear-gassed. The next logical demonstration of intelligence should be in front of Al Aksa mosque while your Arab buddies are rioting over some imaginary slight. The your Muslim friends can kill you for your evil, Christian, "Crusader" presence there.

chamblee, I don't know who

chamblee, I don't know who you are, or where you are writing from, but you really do have a lot of nerve. This comment not only seems to espouse your racist views, but is a personal attack on me which seems quite unjustified. It's clear that you don't have any point to make, which leaves me wondering why you have left a comment at all... p.s. it's spelt "Al Aqsa".

I disagree wth Roger. I

I disagree wth Roger. I actually think it's quite good to have the odd venomous, albeit stupid, comment - makes Jody's point for him and us.

+1 to that ... Jody, let

+1 to that ... Jody, let this wash over you.

You Stand Alone

You Stand Alone Moishe......words cannot convey the anger and resentment that your post will evoke in Jody's friends and loved ones. I sense that is what you are aiming to acheive though, for whatever disturbed reasoning you possess - well done. Your post appalls me and I suggest you find somewhere else to express it. Now I hand over to anyone else who would like to say a few (possibly more colourful) words on this comment by Moishe (Chamblee), Jody's enlightened follower.

Jody You are doing a great

Jody You are doing a great service to your Palestinian friends. You describe their suffering vividly and passionately. We must hope the politicians will take notice and redress the injustices. But, Jody, for all your undoubted courage do remember that great journalists aren't necessarily in the front line all the time.. They observe from a safe distance.
