Blog: Russell Myrie - heatwave
Laad jesus it's hot. When England is hotter than The Bahamas, you know it's some different kind of heat we're experiencing. The city transforms during heatwaves. When it's this hot you get the man dem stripping off just as much as the girls. Even more sometimes. The parks fill up. More alcohol is consumed. Barbecues are hastily arranged. The amount of sickies quadruples.
Yet despite the lack of commuters, using the tube is even less fun. The upper decks of buses become like saunas. Avoiding the BO crew on public transport becomes even harder. School kids, and the elderly are the worst offenders. Sorry, but they are. Anyone who wants to try denying that climate change is in effect really, really needs to shut up now. Especially as the heatwave is set to continue.
Can you imagine the carnage if the G20 protests had taken place in 30 degree plus temperatures? Private prosecutions are being prepared by some of those who have good reason for feeling wronged by the police. But don't get your hopes up.
They're always trying to hot each other up in parliament. New speaker Jon Bercow must have been extra hot in all those stupid ceremonial robes. It would be hard to claim the heat is responsible, but Brown seems to have found his tactic for the election. In response to Cameron's increasingly hysterical questions about the spending cuts which will have to happen regardless of whose in power, Brown hit back with the accusation that the Tories are more concerned with inheritance tax. Just one issue which means they are 'the party of the few'. A lot of working class people are less than enamoured with Labour right now. But they must realise Tories will be worse.
For once Nick Clegg had something half decent to say. He showed some balls, and a willingness to cuss hard, when he said that maybe Peter Mandelson and George Osborne need to go on another yacht so they can sort out the confusion over government information on spending. He must still be vex from that time when the whole house laughed kinda hard at him. Beware the sleeping giant. But Brown got him back when he said that, like The Tories, they're very good at criticising his policies, but not very good at coming up with one of their own.
It's always hotter than the Devil's backside in Iran. Lembit Opik showed a little depth during PMQ's when inquiring about the lot of those who practice the Ba'hai faith in Iran. A very valid point, but everyone in Iran, especially British embassy staff, need to watch their backs right now. At least three more embassy employees were released. But what about the one that remains in custody?
Last but by no means least rest in peace to Michael Jackson. A true legend that.
