Ctrl.Alt.Shift @ Barack Obama's People
The streets of Birmingham were heaving with people on this beautiful morning on Saturday April 18th. An exhibition on Barrack Obama's People was opening in the heart of the city. What exactly was this exhibition for? Why Birmingham? These were the questions I went to find answers to.
I entered the Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery not knowing what to expect. People were crowded through the corridors of the building. It was amazing to see. People from all different backgrounds were gathered here admiring the many portraits and exhibitions within the gallery. I walked towards the 'corridor of power' as Rhonda Wilson (the Creative Director of West Midlands photography agency, Rhubarb-Rhubarb) describes it, and was suddenly hit by this natural form of elegance and simplicity.
Renowned photographer Nadav Kander has captured Obama's administration in a simple but unique way. As two young girls said: "They all look normal, just like us, some even nervous". I believe the exhibition is in place for just that purpose - for us to see and understand that these people are just like us, and are here to bring a change, which as artist Chris Morton states "is what we need in this current time; a push for stability."
The ambiance within the gallery was the same feeling of change which regenerated the power within the White House through the use of a naturally posed pictures and extreme diversity. Having asked many of the visitors what they thought of the exhibition, there was a general consensus that it showed the kind of person Obama is; charismatic and one who "stuck to his policies," according to musician Daniel Tse.
Pat and Bob Tomlinson from Staffordshire, felt that having this exhibition in Birmingham was "amazing" for the city, and the exhibition has been a historical moment for both Birmingham and for the President of the USA. Birmingham will now be recognised as "an international centre for creative excellence" and the exhibition fits well with the "diversity of Birmingham and West Midlands" said Rhonda Wilson.
Hopping from picture to picture, Naved Kander has depicted an individual personality in each one. The president's picture was by far the most interesting, encompassed within a black background, and a light shining upon it. One could question how long this light will continue shining, just as photographer Ed Bourmier questioned the president's impetus: "How long will this motivation to bring a sustainable change actually last?"
In the following years, such a question is something our generation will have the privilege of being answered from the forefront of change.
Barack Obama's People will be on show until August 31st. For more details please visit www.bmag.org.uk
