Ctrl.Alt.STRIKE London - Match Report
The baking sun was perhaps more suited to a cricket match than a 5-a-side football tournament, but the London teams were out in force at the Ctrl.Alt.STRIKE footy comp at Mill Hill Powerleague on Saturday June 26.
Eight teams made up two leagues to decide who would go through to the semi-finals and final to win the shiny STRIKE trophy.
The atmosphere was buzzing and fair play was the order of the day, “Don’t worry lads, it’s for charity”, one of the guys said after his team lost a game.
The event was put on by Ctrl.Alt.Shift and Platform2 to give people an insight into the kind of poverty affecting South Africa at a time when such riches are sweeping into the country.
The total wage for players in the Premier League is more than £1bn, hard to related to the less than £1.50 that 43% of the population of South Africa get paid a day.
The day was packed with screenings of the World Cup games, a World Cup quiz which alternated between football-related and poverty-related questions, campaign postcards to sign and a delicious buffet to feast on once the final was over.
Congratulations to Valencia, worthy winners of the tournament, and thanks to everyone who came down and made it such a successful event.
Check out some of the photos from the day - video to follow.
