Rights For Everybody! Just As Long As We Don't Have To Go Out Of Our Way...
The theme for this year’s World AIDS Day is Universal Access and Human Rights. Great stuff. Everyone has rights and therefore everyone deserves access to treatment. I’m glad we agree.
This also ties in nicely with the fact that in a few days it’s the anniversary of the signing of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. According to Peter Bailey, the Declaration represents the single most important document created in the 20th Century. I had some vague awareness that it existed, that someone at some point had tried to enshrine my rights in international law. But to be honest, I’d never read it before. In the West most of us are lucky enough to possess the rights laid out in the document without too much of a fuss. We didn’t have to fight for access to education, medical care or social services. So I’ve never had to dig out a copy of the declaration to find out whether or not my rights are being violated; it’s never been necessary. Luckily for me, I’m one of a fortunate minority. Not quite so lucky for Julius.I met Julius in October. He’s a farmer living near the Machakos district of Kenya. Julius was a great guy; friendly, welcoming and willing to talk to me about some harrowing stuff. He’s also been brave enough, in a society straining under the weight of massive stigma, to get himself tested for HIV. Julius, his wife and one of his children are all now living in the knowledge that they are HIV positive. The fact that Julius could get himself tested is good - it means he’s able to get the necessary treatment to try and keep himself healthy. The thing is though, once you’re on ARVs, it’s really important that you’re able to eat a decent diet. HIV batters the immune system and therefore it’s crucial that people like Julius stay healthy in order to stave off opportunistic infections.
Good job then that in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food. Julius, as a farmer, feeds his family and makes a living from the land, so it should be relatively easy to make sure he has enough to eat. Except for the fact that it hasn’t rained now for three seasons. This means no crops, no income, and no food for Julius and his family.
Droughts have been a feature of the Kenyan climate for decades, but the droughts are getting much more frequent and much more severe. Almost certainly a result of climate change.
The Declaration also says that everyone is entitled to a social and international order in which the rights set out in the Declaration can be fully realised. That makes it everybody’s responsibility to make sure that everybody gets their rights without a fuss.
