Strike A Pose @ Birmingham Expose Fashion Show
There are loads of issues affecting people in developing countries that are really hard to talk about; HIV, violence against women, child soldiers - all things that make people feel uncomfortable and embarrassed to discuss, especially with people their own age.
Young people in a number of African countries have a great history of using dance, drama and music to break down the barriers of awkwardness and expose these issues head on.
The Expose fashion show in Birmingham on Tuesday April 27 followed in that tradition. Using popular culture to get across messages of poverty, inequality, climate change and education (amongst many other hard-hitting issues), the night kicked off with O Verona from the Romeo and Juliet soundtrack as topless male models paraded the catwalk.
The crowd was won over immediately, and screams and applause accompanied every act from then on. 
The host, Spoz, introduced the main themes and was instantly followed by an African drummer. This set up the structure of the night; models showcasing clothes by local designers interspersed with local talent to raise awareness of global issues.
The talent drew on a variety of traditions and cultures and included professional Dhol drummers and dancers Eternal Taal, Bhangra dancers Nachda Sansaar, beatboxing, poets, drama collective Facing HIV, and Smash Bro’z - winner of the 2010 the UK Hip Hop Championships.
The modelling itself was done in sets which each focused on a different global issue. 
The child soldiers set, for example, had the models dressed in army-inspired clothing with striking make-up, black bands across their eyes, and powerful choreography as the guys marched and forced stripes under the eyes of the girls who stood to attention.
Projected behind the models were statistics about the issue. In the inequality set, for example, the stat, “Women do two-thirds of the world’s work, receive 10 per cent of the world’s income and own 1 per cent of the means of production” drew attention to the contradictions of how the world works.
Two of the Ctrl.Alt.Shift short films, Man Made and War School, were screened; exploring the issues of human trafficking and child soldiers respectively, shocking the audience into silence for the only time during the night. 
A couple of climate change shorts by Do the Green Thing were also on show, providing an entertaining look at ways to cut our carbon output.
Taking place in the big club space of Bar Risa, the venue complemented the amount of work put in, with professional lighting, staging and engrossing music which completely absorbed the audience. The transitions between acts were slick and produced a continuously engaging, informative evening of global injustice edutainment for the more than 150-strong audience.
With over £700 raised for Christian Aid’s work, nights like this not only raise awareness in the UK, but make a real difference to people across the world who need our support.
