Young Blood: G20 Reflections
After Climate Camp, I had only had a few hours sleep, but I was determined to take back to the streets as soon as possible. It was the day world leaders would meet to discuss the world economy they have single-handedly destroyed, and I for one wanted to show the G20 what time it is.
I got to Canning Town tube station on time to meet the Stop the War Coalition, namely the vocal chanters I was marching with yesterday, as the British Transport Police took to arresting random people as they passed through the station.
From there, we marched as far as we could, which left us around 600 metres away from the ExCel Centre where the G20 Summit was taking place. All along the roads, the police presence was completely unprecedented and unwarranted. Yet again, it is clear that the world leaders are trying to block out the voices of the nation. Wake up, Mr. Gordon Brown!
They can block protestors all they like, but our voices would not be silenced. It was the same agenda as usual - jobs not bombs, troops out of Iraq and Afghanistan, banish all nuclear weapons and end the siege of Gaza.
"Gaza Gaza don't you cry/We will never let you die!"
"What do we want... JOBS NOT BOMBS!
When do we want it... NOW!"
"From Afghanistan to Iraq/People want their freedom back!"
We screamed, we danced, we chanted.
The important thing is we keep resisting, we keep fighting, no matter how futile the path may seem. If Fidel could storm Cuba with 70 men, if Nelson Mandela could win victory for his nation after 27 years in jail, we, the people, can indict the criminals of New Labour.
We were also joined by a vast array of other organisations, including groups protesting against the witch-hunt of Omar al-Bashir, and the slaughter of little-publicised regions Ogaden and Eritrea. The colour, dance, smiles and irrepressible spirit of the African contingent was inspirational. The movement against the government now seems so widespread that I am sure it will succeed.
