The Week In Music
Whilst rock lovers mourn over the split of Oasis and Reading Festival organisers are being fined for failure of risk assessment, it seems the urban scene is the hottest thing in music right now, and by hot I'm talking Ghana in summer kinda hot.
Our very own Jay Sean is taking the American charts by storm as quick as Obama did in the US elections.
The UK artists over here are also fighting like soldiers for the top spot in our charts. Jay Sean’s collaboration with American rapper and CEO of label Young Money, Lil’ Wayne has made Jay the first British male to reach number one the US billboard charts so congratulations to him. Over here it looks like Chipmunk is set to knock Taio Cruz off the top spot with Oopsy Daisy ft Dayo so well done you (and remember to check the Ctrl.Alt.Shift film War School which boasts a soundtrack from Mr Chip). Whitney Houston is also back with her new single Million Dollar Bill which original Whitney fans are seeming to embrace and welcome. I on the other hand, think she's doing as much use in the music industry as a bullet proof vest over in Afghanistan.
London has been the host for many hip hop acts this week including a debatable show by Raekwon and Lil’ Wayne’s Apollo gigs. Lil’ Wayne exposed his love for rock at his first show at the Hammersmith venue this week, which might be a prelude of things to come from his forthcoming album Rebirth.

It seems that Lil’ Wayne isn’t the only one with something new to tell us. Across the pond it seems that Beyonce aka Sasha Fierce has started a trend and the latest R&B warbler to introduce us to her alter ego is Jennifer Lopez aka Lola. Her latest single Fresh Out the Oven, featuring fellow Puerto Rican Papi Pitbull, is the first track off her new album.
With the release of Gracious K's Migraine Skank next week I’m sure we can look forward to more success from British artists. But if you're looking forward for something to keep you occupied until then, world music artist Manu Chao has teamed up with the Colifatos, a group of Argentinean psychiatric patients on a new project. "From Tiburcio Borda Hospital’s garden, in Buenos Aires, Radio La Colifata is broadcasting again... 20 themes to laugh, to cry, to meditate about life, death, mothers, loneliness, love, tango, Pope, Nero, the end of the world, the sun and more crazy grandmas…" Hosted over at Viva la Colifata, a support website to this non-profit organisation, you can download this journey of musical thought for free. Word to that.
