Ctrl.Alt.Shift Comedy Night @ The Hi-Fi Club

Comedy - is it a good way to get an idea across? I think so. I remember jokes better than I remember a lecture. And that's why Ctrl.Alt.Shift hosted a comedy night in Leeds' Hi-Fi Club last week, to make people see that we can have a laugh at the same issues that make us question the way things are.

Ctrl.Alt.Shift @ Shifty Film Launch, Bar Rumba

Shifty hit cinemas on April 24th, having already managed to catch this film at a preview earlier in the month we knew that the reviews touting it as "A strong contender for British film of the year..." weren't off the mark. We also knew that for a film that cost just under a hundred grand to make, it's not only going to make movements in the box...

Blog - Bibi van der Zee

So it seems that being hit by a policeman is news - to the surprise of many activists I know who have been hit a few times. "No one was impressed before," said one. "Police have been hitting protesters as long as I can remember, why the interest now?" The reason for the interest now, of course, is because suddenly we are in a...

Editors Blog: Riz Ahmed

New Brit flick Shifty - where a young crack cocaine dealer in London sees his life spiral out of control when his best friend returns home -  is heading for the list of cult underworld classics. And It’s a sure bet that lead actor Riz Ahmed’s star will continue to rise as a result…

Feature: I Can't Think Straight

Last month, London hosted its 23rd Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, and Ctrl.Alt.Shift took the opportunity to catch up with Shamim Sarif to talk about her film 'I Can't Think Straight'. It's a movie that somehow manages to juggle women coming to terms with their sexuality, Middle Eastern politics and religious and cultural taboos, and still end...

Ctrl.Alt.Shift @ Disordered?

The Wellcome Collection in Euston, London, home to all things combining medicine with art, recently held a talk entitled 'Disordered?' The premise of the discussion was quite simple: We currently have a number of personality disorder categories used by psychiatrists today, such as antisocial, borderline, avoidant and dependent. What is the impact...

Lemmer's Rogue Report

Where was Hamid Karzai, president of Afghanistan, when Jacqui Smith needed him? Ms. Smith works long hours supervising police brutality, leaked memos, dodgy arrests and Gordon Brown's ego, and clearly this leaves her husband very frustrated. He is left at home, alone, with nothing but a second-hand expense account and his own restless right hand....

Ctrl.Alt.Shift @ A Forca De Gua Exhibition

Upon walking into London's theprintspace, my eyes lit up as I saw an array of spectacular customised guitars; each one graffed-up, funked-up, gleaming with sheer genius graffsmanship. As a guitar player, I felt to snatch and vanish ninja-style, until I remembered - these were up for auction, and all proceeds were going to the poorest children in...
