Postcards From The Edge: Egypt - Ma sallema Assuit

Submitted by: Bede.Munnings

We have just left the community in Assuit where I have been volunteering. I was part of the committee amongst my team who organized a community farewell. There were a lot of things that seemed to be going wrong at the last minutes. Our weeks of planning seemed to be unraveling over a few hours. But most of our invited guests turned up and sort of on time. A faulty microphone caused further delay. My farewell speech in Arabic was a moment of stage fright.

People in Brazil have taken to fashioning moustaches as a form of protest against the country's president. Known as "greve de bigode" or "moustache strike," people are submitting photos of themselves donning real or fake moustaches to the blog tiremobigode.blogspot.com. The moustache is a reference to the Brazilian president, Jose Sarney, who is accused of nepotism and embezzlement and is famous for his manly 'tache.

Can you have a good time going from Bashy to Peter Kosminsky in the front room of a leading art institution? With United Underground, a night of music and activism at the Southbank Centre, Ctrl.Alt.Shift gave it their best shot.
